The People vs. Mideo

I am an artist and I am a catholic.

My stand against the issue regarding the artist name Mideo and how he ridiculed Christ is neither pro or anti. As an artist I understood his sentiments as an artist, the idea of freedom of speech. But as a catholic I understood the stand of the people and the religious who are appalled by it.

I think we should see this incident in a wholly separate issue. There are three separate persona’s in this equation: the artist, the religious and the viewer. And each person will have their different opinions. So how do we solve this conflict?

We don’t. We have to try to understand and respect each other’s opinion no matter how grave or how insulting it is to our beliefs. That’s just how life is. But do I agree with what the artist did? No I am not. Even as an artist, even with our freedom of expression, we have a social responsibility as citizens of this country. We are artist and we have the ability to reconstruct art as we want it. We can do better. If you want to solely just express your freedom with no care about what others will say or think, then i suggest you make your own country where your opinions and ideas will only be the one that matters.
