I am an artist and I am a catholic.
My stand against the issue regarding the artist name Mideo and how he ridiculed Christ is neither pro or anti. As an artist I understood his sentiments as an artist, the idea of freedom of speech. But as a catholic I understood the stand of the people and the religious who are appalled by it.
I think we should see this incident in a wholly separate issue. There are three separate persona’s in this equation: the artist, the religious and the viewer. And each person will have their different opinions. So how do we solve this conflict?
We don’t. We have to try to understand and respect each other’s opinion no matter how grave or how insulting it is to our beliefs. That’s just how life is. But do I agree with what the artist did? No I am not. Even as an artist, even with our freedom of expression, we have a social responsibility as citizens of this country. We are artist and we have the ability to reconstruct art as we want it. We can do better. If you want to solely just express your freedom with no care about what others will say or think, then i suggest you make your own country where your opinions and ideas will only be the one that matters.
I know you are mad at the former administration and you are angered at how GMA did on her term but that’s all in the past. In order for change to happen, we have to live forward. Don’t you see, as you accomplish your personal vendetta against GMA, alot of families are starving, many die from poverty, people who are inflicted by the storms are growing hopeless.
How many more days are you going to let your countrymen wait? If there is one trait Filipinos are known for other than our hospitality is that we are a forgiving nation. Maybe that’s one thing you can learn from those people who voted for you. They couldn’t care less about what GMA has done, its already been done. If you want justice to be brought…..then be the change you wish to see in this world.
"In the movie, Philadelphia, Tom Hanks plays a gay character infected with HIV. He seek the help of a lawyer defend him as people condemn him of his character and illness. I don’t remember having to see one single, "sex scene" in this movie yet I understood it was a gay movie. After the movie, it made me realize that they are no different from people who are straight. Discriminating people against their sexual preference is racism too"
Here in the Philippines, you would know a gay movie from how it is made….usually in one location. May it be a gay bar, massage parlor or an old knocked down movie house. The quality is quite jarred too, sometimes its so dark that you would have to really focus on the screen to see anything less you hear moans and groans will you know something has happened.
But is that all there is about gay movies? sex? So here are lesbians and gay people shouting in the streets, “we want equality, we have rights” well, if you want equality you have to change your representation in the movies. A majority of close minded people i know are afraid of gay people coz they see them as hungry sex stricken people or that they are endorsers of HIV. If you want other people to see a possible equality of rights, you have to be represented better. You’re not just a piece of ass or cock, you’re a person. In the international film festivals, there are pink films that don’t just center on sex. Maybe a part but not the whole 35mm film roll.
I have this gay friend who was pro life and wanted to sign up for the protest against the RH Bill but the girl who was passing around leaflets snob past him which of course pissed my friend off. That day, he became pro RH Bill.
I think more than the RH Bill, more than whatever misunderstanding, more than terrorism. That the biggest concern the government should focus on is people’s IGNORANCE of each other’s rights. Respect thy neighbor beyond religion, beyond race, beyond opinion or skin color.
When my mom’s friends were chanting about the bad effects of the RH bill on people or it going against our faiths, deep inside, I was thinking, “well, I’m pro choice.” It’s so much easier to say something you’re against to when you’re not the person in the situation. When you have no job and no means of financial stability or if you’re too young to have a child. I am not taking sides nor am I taking sides. People can only help so much and at the end of the day, its still their choice. Just like when you can’t force someone to love you back just coz you do or make someone like the same color you like. Other than reacting on the RH bill, people should think about creating more jobs for people because the real reason people tend to do stupid things with their lives coz their right to live a normal life is very limited.
When the sign sheet was being passed around, I didn’t sign my name and this old lady was eyeing at me like a hawk as if telling me, “you evil thing!”
If there’s one thing I’m sure of, our God is a forgiving God. As long as we do things with a viable reason that he will understand. After all everything that happens in our lives are supposed to make us strong and wiser if at the end of the day and we weren’t able to learn the lesson. There will always be another day when he hopes we will.
